Working Legally in Armenia: Permits, Employers and Self-Employment

Armenia does not make foreigners jump through a separate work-permit maze: legal work runs through the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) or self-employment structures. Here are the routes for employees, IT contractors and independent operators.

work permits employment

The core principle: TRP replaces the work permit

The key fact that surprises most newcomers: a Temporary Residence Permit issued on work grounds allows its holder to work in Armenia without a separate work permit, and a business-ground TRP allows running a business. The TRP is issued for up to one year and is renewable while the grounds continue. Everything therefore revolves around documenting your grounds properly — an employment contract, company ownership, enrollment or family ties — and filing at the Passport & Visa Department (OVIR) in Yerevan before your current status expires.

Working for an Armenian employer

If a local company hires you, the employment relationship becomes your TRP ground. The typical document set includes your passport with a notarized Armenian translation, the application form, a photo, the employment documentation proving the ground, and the state fee. Armenian employers — especially in IT — are used to hiring foreigners, and HR teams generally cooperate smoothly with the process. We prepare the employee side of the file, keep timelines in view and communicate with the employer so nothing stalls.

IT contractors and remote specialists

Armenia actively courts tech talent, and certified IT companies pay a dramatically reduced profit tax (around 5%) with payroll benefits — which makes employment inside the sector both cheap for employers and stable for staff. Contractors serving foreign clients from Armenia should think in two layers: immigration (your TRP ground) and tax (your residency status and where your income is taxed). Spending 183+ days in Armenia in a consecutive 12-month period makes you a tax resident with worldwide income reporting, tempered by double tax treaties with 40+ countries including China. We align both layers before you relocate.

Self-employment: the IE (sole proprietor) route

Independent operators — consultants, traders, freelancers — can register as a sole proprietorship (IE), which is available to foreigners and carries simpler taxes for small operators than a full company. The IE structure can serve as the foundation for a business-ground TRP when activity is genuine. The alternative is incorporating an LLC: 1–3 business days to register, 100% foreign ownership, no minimum capital. Which vehicle fits depends on turnover, clients and liability — we model both.

Rights and practicalities once you hold a TRP

A work-ground TRP gives you legal employment, a PSN-based tax identity, access to banking and the ability to renew annually. Residence does not automatically equal tax residency — that follows the 183-day rule. If your situation changes — new employer, shift to self-employment, company closed — your grounds must stay consistent with reality, because renewals are examined. After roughly three years of legal residence, naturalization becomes possible (with an Armenian language and constitution exam), and Armenia recognizes dual citizenship.

How GF Help manages the process

We handle the full work-residence track: choosing the right ground, preparing translations and notarizations, assembling the OVIR file, filing before deadlines and following up until the card is in your hand. Chinese-speaking clients coordinate everything on WeChat with documents in three languages. If your employer initiates the process, we act as your independent adviser so your interests stay protected. Rules change — we verify current requirements for your nationality and situation at every filing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a work permit to work in Armenia?

Foreigners work on the basis of a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) issued on work grounds — a work-ground TRP holder needs no separate work permit. The TRP is issued up to one year and is renewable.

Can freelancers work legally in Armenia?

Yes. Options include registering as a sole proprietor (IE) with simplified taxes, or founding an LLC. A genuine business activity can ground a business TRP. We choose the structure around your turnover and clients.

How long until I can apply for citizenship through work?

Naturalization generally requires around three years of legal residence plus Armenian language and constitution exams. Dual citizenship is recognized. Ethnic Armenians have simplified procedures.
