Temporary Residence Permit in Armenia
We obtain and renew Armenian Temporary Residence Permits (TRP) for foreigners β on work, business, study or family grounds β preparing the dossier, translations and OVIR submissions end to end.
Who needs a TRP and on what grounds
Visa-free entry lets Chinese citizens stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and many other nationalities enjoy similar short-stay regimes. To stay longer, a residence permit is required. The Temporary Residence Permit is issued for up to one year and is renewable; the most common grounds are work, business activity, study and family ties, with Armenian ethnicity as an additional ground.
- Work ground β employment with an Armenian company; a work-ground TRP lets you work without a separate work permit
- Business ground β founders and directors of Armenian companies; a business-ground TRP lets you run the business
- Study ground β enrolled students of Armenian universities
- Family ground β close relatives of residents or citizens
Required documents
The core package is consistent across grounds, while the supporting evidence differs. Exact lists and state fees change from time to time; our team confirms the current requirements for your specific case before filing.
- Passport with notarized Armenian translation
- Completed application form and photos
- Documents proving the ground: employment contract, company registration, enrollment letter or family certificates
- State fee payment receipt
How the process works at OVIR
Applications are filed at the Passport & Visa Department of the Police (commonly called OVIR) in Yerevan, before your current legal status expires. We prepare the dossier, book the appointment, accompany you (or act via power of attorney where allowed) and track the review. Processing timelines depend on the ground and workload; we give you a realistic estimate for your case at consultation.
- Step 1 β free consultation, choose the right ground
- Step 2 β collect and translate documents, pay state fee
- Step 3 β file at OVIR and track the review
- Step 4 β receive the TRP card, plan the renewal
Renewal and common pitfalls
A TRP must be renewed before it expires β filing late can mean starting over and losing legal status. Grounds must remain valid at renewal: the company should be active, the employment contract in force, the study ongoing. We calendar your renewal date, refresh the supporting documents and file on time.
TRP as a step toward permanent residence
Legal residence in Armenia accumulates toward permanent residency and, eventually, citizenship eligibility. Keeping an unbroken, well-documented TRP history matters for those longer-term goals β our team plans your residence track accordingly, and reminds you that residence does not automatically equal tax residency.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a Temporary Residence Permit valid?
A TRP is issued for up to one year and can be renewed. Exact validity depends on the ground and supporting documents; we confirm what to expect in your case.
Can I work in Armenia on a TRP?
Yes. A work-ground TRP allows employment without a separate work permit, and a business-ground TRP allows you to run your Armenian company.
Where do I apply?
At the Passport & Visa Department of the Police (OVIR) in Yerevan, before your current status expires. We prepare and file the dossier with you.
Does a residence permit make me a tax resident?
No, not automatically. Tax residency depends mainly on spending 183+ days in Armenia in a consecutive 12-month period. See our tax residency service for planning.
