Armenia for Chinese Citizens: Visa-Free Living, Banking and Business
Since 2020, Chinese passport holders can stay in Armenia visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period — and stay longer with a residence permit. This is the deepest practical guide for Chinese entrepreneurs, families and remote professionals considering Armenia as a base.
Visa-free 90/180: what the agreement gives you
The China–Armenia mutual visa-free agreement has been in force since 2020. Chinese citizens can enter with an ordinary passport and stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period — no visa, no invitation letter, no e-visa fee. This is one of the most generous arrangements available to Chinese passport holders anywhere in the Caucasus or the wider EAEU region, and it makes Armenia an ideal country to test before committing to relocation.
Entry is straightforward through Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) in Yerevan, and the land borders with Georgia and Iran are open if you are travelling overland. The 90 days are for short stays: scouting business opportunities, opening a bank account, registering a company or simply living in Yerevan. If you want to stay longer, the path is a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) — issued for up to one year and renewable — with work, business, study or family grounds. GF Help prepares and files TRP applications at the Passport & Visa Department (OVIR) end to end.
Why Chinese entrepreneurs choose Armenia
Armenia occupies a rare position: it is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), giving duty-free trade with Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, plus free trade agreements with Vietnam, Iran, Serbia and Singapore. At the same time it holds EU GSP+ status under a CEPA agreement, and it participates in Belt and Road cooperation with China. A company registered in Yerevan can therefore serve Russian, European and Chinese markets from one small, affordable base.
Domestically, the conditions are attractive: 100% foreign ownership of an LLC is allowed, there is no local director requirement and no mandatory minimum capital, and company registration at the State Register Agency typically takes just 1–3 business days. Certified IT companies pay a dramatically reduced profit tax (around 5% instead of the standard 18%, with payroll benefits as well). A growing Chinese business presence — trade, logistics along the China–EAEU corridor, e-commerce and IT outsourcing — means you arrive into an ecosystem, not a vacuum.
Banking that works for Chinese clients
Non-residents can open Armenian bank accounts. The core requirements are a valid passport and an Armenian Public Services Number (PSN), which we arrange within days; banks may also ask for proof of address and a source-of-funds explanation. Accounts are multi-currency — AMD, USD, EUR and RUB — and remote opening via a notarized power of attorney is possible in many cases, so you do not necessarily have to fly in.
For Chinese clients specifically: UnionPay cards work in Armenia, and dual-brand cards with the local ArCa payment system exist. The China–Armenia central bank currency swap line (around 10 billion CNY / 770 billion AMD) underpins CNY settlement infrastructure between the two countries. KYC for Chinese nationals typically involves a passport translation, a source-of-funds explanation and sometimes reference letters — our team prepares compliant dossiers, so your application is complete the first time.
The Chinese community and daily life
Armenia does not yet have a large Chinatown-style community, but the Chinese presence is growing steadily around trade, logistics and tech, and diaspora connections with China are deepening. Yerevan itself is safe, walkable and family-friendly, with 24/7 city life, abundant cafés and restaurants (a meal in a mid-range restaurant runs $8–15), and costs well below major Chinese tier-1 cities for housing and services.
Two practical realities to plan around: Chinese is rarely spoken locally — Russian is widespread and English is growing in business — and there is no Chinese-curriculum school yet, so families choose among international schools such as Ayb, QSI and the European School of Armenia. This is exactly why GF Help exists: a Chinese-speaking, Yerevan-based team that removes the language barrier from every interaction, from bank compliance officers to school admissions.
WeChat-first service: how we work with you
We run our client relationships the way Chinese clients prefer: on WeChat. From the first consultation you talk to Chinese-speaking staff — not a translation layer — who answer questions in real time, explain Armenian compliance requirements in plain language, and prepare documents in Chinese, English and Armenian in parallel.
The full cycle is covered by one team: PSN and notarized translations, bank account opening, company registration and legal address, accounting, residence permits, property search and transactions, school admissions advice, driver license exchange and everyday concierge tasks. We are part of the Grand Freedom group, which owns hotels in Armenia — Aurora Resort Tsaghkadzor, Nacho Hotel Yerevan, Artanish Beach Resort and Cone Hotel Dilijan — so even your first nights and relocation logistics come from the same trusted local owner. Support is available over WeChat, WhatsApp and Telegram.
Long-term horizon: residence and citizenship
If Armenia works for you, the long-term path is clear. A TRP is renewed annually while your grounds (business, work, study, family) continue; a Permanent Residence Permit becomes available for significant business or investment activity, close family of citizens, Armenian origin or special contribution, and is renewed every 10 years. Citizenship by naturalization requires roughly three years of legal residence plus an Armenian language and constitution exam, and Armenia recognizes dual citizenship. Property purchase can also support a residence application on investment grounds, subject to a minimum value that we verify for your case.
Note that residence does not automatically equal tax residency: spending 183+ days in Armenia in a consecutive 12-month period does. Armenia has double tax treaties with 40+ countries, including China, which prevents double taxation for properly structured individuals and companies.
Who we help — and how to start
Our typical Chinese clients are traders building an EAEU corridor business, IT specialists and founders seeking the certified-company tax regime, families wanting a safe, affordable base with international schooling, and professionals who need a compliant bank account and a legal address without relocating their whole life. The starting point is always the same: a free consultation on WeChat, where we map your goals to the right combination of visa-free stay, banking, company and residence route — and tell you honestly if Armenia is not the right fit.
Frequently asked questions
Do Chinese citizens really not need a visa for Armenia?
Correct. Under the mutual visa-free agreement in force since 2020, Chinese citizens with an ordinary passport stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period with no visa. For longer stays you need a residence permit, which GF Help arranges.
Can I use UnionPay and Chinese cards in Armenia?
UnionPay works in Armenia, and dual-brand cards with the local ArCa system exist. The China–Armenia central bank swap line of roughly 10 billion CNY supports CNY settlement infrastructure. Availability at individual merchants varies; we advise on practical setups.
Can I register an Armenian company remotely from China?
Yes. Via a notarized and apostilled/consular-legalized power of attorney, registration takes 1–3 business days at the State Register Agency and you never need to fly in. Bank account opening can often be done remotely too.
Is there a Chinese school in Yerevan?
Not yet — there is no Chinese-curriculum school. Families choose among international schools (Ayb, QSI, European School of Armenia) and Russian/British-stream options. We advise on admissions and can accompany the process in Chinese.
